The short answer
A term loan provides a defined amount with an agreed repayment schedule. Match the useful life and cash-generating purpose of the purchase to the duration of the debt.
Look beyond the headline rate
A payment, factor rate, interest rate, and APR are not interchangeable. Ask for the full schedule and every fee. Compare the actual cash changing hands over the same time period, including costs deducted before funds are delivered.
Evidence to gather
Business bank statements, financial statements, tax records when requested, ownership details, and a use-of-funds budget.
How to compare the decision
Compare net proceeds, payment frequency, total repayment, guarantees, collateral, and prepayment conditions.
Risks and limits
A personal guarantee can expose the owner's assets. Business revenue is not the same as cash available for debt service.
A practical action plan
Identify net proceeds. List recurring and one-time fees. Sum scheduled payments. Read late-payment and early-payoff terms. Apply these checks to small business term loans using the evidence above. Record unanswered questions and do not treat missing information as an approval or a favorable term.
